Father of two. Economist. Politician.
Miguel was born in Aruba and is the proud father of two children, Mateo and Miranda. He is a graduate of Tufts University with degrees in international relations and economics. He worked in the private sector in the areas of economics, finance and investments before entering politics in 2020 upon founding the ACCION21 party. The covid-19 pandemic highlighted the island’s structural issues including unsustainable debt levels, an over bloated public sector and unacceptable levels of poverty. At the young age of fourteen Miguel went to study abroad in Switzerland at the prestigious Insitut Le Rosey where he graduated top of his class in 1995. He has had the privilege of living in many countries in Europe, the United States, Australia and Costa Rica. Miguel’s global experience brings a new perspective to Aruban politics, one focused on adopting international best practices so that everyone can live better. Miguel strongly believes in ACCION21’s liberal progressive ideology and as a member the parliament strongly upheld its principles. Despite being a newcomer, Miguel is the member of parliament who introduced the most private member bills (law initiatives), asked the most questions to ministers, cooperated on many amendments and motions. Miguel and ACCION21 have proven their effectiveness in parliament and are ready to continue working for the benefit of the Aruban people. Miguel is committed to equal rights for all and has been a champion for LGBT rights, witnessing the introduction of same-sex marriage on July 12, 2024. His focus for the next governing period will include eliminating poverty, attending the ecological crisis, revitalizing San Nicolas and fiscal reform including redesigning our tax system and how the government finances itself. In 2021 Miguel was the 5th vote-getter with 2019 votes and based on his performance during the past three and a half years he hopes to see both ACCION21 and his votes grow so together we can achieve the Aruba we know it has the potential to be.
